 | | Dufreign - The Band | | If such a series of consequences could be considered as carefully planned, the end product would be DUFREIGN. The band and the music existed well before the actual formation of the group. In late winter 2004 Josh Heinz, founder, singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist and main lyricist of the band had originally played with another outfit based in Memphis, TN that went by the name Wyndom Earle. After Wyndom Earle ran its course and the original members went in different directions, Josh Heinz relocated to the greater Palm Springs area. Not content to simply let a lack of band members spoil his chances for performing live, Josh picked up his acoustic guitar and rode the solo circuit for the better part of three years. During this time he would conceive, write and record the full length album Blasting Echo as a way to share the vision he had for a full band.
It was during a solo performance for the Mystic Avalanche A & R Showcase Competition, Josh met soon to be co-founder, lead and rhythm guitarist, lyricist and songwriter Greg Lesnjak. Lesnjak was impressed with Heinz’ songwriting and personal authenticity. Greg had been previously been working with a band called The Film. After being together for four years, Greg took a two month leave of absence to strengthen his recently recovered sobriety. Not long afterward, The Film would be no more. During the time between The Film’s demise and the birth of DUFREIGN, Lesnjak continued to write and compose. Like Blasting Echo, many of those songs would be a part of what is now known as DUFREIGN. Heinz and Lesnjak played their first show as an acoustic duo in January 2005 at Buckett’s in Palm Springs.
The next position to fill on the agenda was a bass player. After receiving a writeup in the Desert Post Weekly involving the A & R Competition, Josh got a call from soon to be bassist, Dave Virginia. A four year veteran of the desert music scene, including stints in Wood Monkey, where he was joined by his father, and Less Than Zero, a thrash/metal outfit, Dave was inspired by the music Josh and Greg were creating. His overall enthusiasm and genuine appreciation for the music and lyrics has made him an asset since the moment he first practiced with the duo. The three members made their first appearance at Frankie J’s in February 2005.
The last position to fill was the drum stool. Enter Nathan Marchi. Drum line extraordinaire, as well as numerous years experience in live rock and roll performance, the addition of his abilities has allowed DUFREIGN to pursue the more aggressive side of their music without having to compromise the melodic catchy-ness of their music.
DUFREIGN has gained steady momentum since its inception as a full band. In only a short amount of time the band has played a handful of very successful shows, which includes winning in the 93.7 KCLB Battle of the Bands contest at the 2005 Riverside County Date Festival. And this is only the beginning. With their powerful sound and energetic stage presence, DUFREIGN is more than your average Rock and Roll band.
